Janu Basti Therapy (जानु बस्ति)
Medicated warm herbal oil reservoir placed over the knee joint to deeply lubricate degenerated cartilage, alleviate bone-on-bone friction, and avoid invasive knee surgery.
What is Janu Basti?
Janu Basti (जानु बस्ति) is a specialized Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapy where a ring made of organic black gram (Masha) flour dough is carefully sealed over the affected knee joint. Warm, medicated herbal decoction oils are poured inside and maintained at a therapeutic temperature for 30–45 minutes.
The prolonged transdermal absorption of herbal lipids stimulates the production of synovial fluid, reduces inflammation of the subchondral bone, and revitalizes worn cartilage in patients suffering from Knee Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata).
The Clinical Process
1. Joint Palpation & Dough Ring Formation
Careful assessment of patellar mobility, followed by the crafting and leak-proof sealing of a warm herbal dough reservoir over the knee.
2. Continuous Medicated Oil Retention
Continuous recycling and replenishment of warm herbal oil (40-42°C) to maintain optimum transdermal penetration throughout the session.
3. Patellar Marma Mobilization
Gentle joint mobilization and warm fomentation (Swedana) to relax surrounding ligaments, hamstring tendons, and calf muscles.
